What product or which service does the startup provide?
Djustin prevents smartphone distractions by effectively changing driver behaviour. Our approach combines 3 key elements: hardware, software and rewards. First, we designed a smart cell phone cradle (the hardware part) that automatically detects your phone when you enter your vehicle. Second, our app (software) blocks common smartphone distractions while driving, allowing handsfree calls, navigation, your favourite music app, providing automated replies and trip monitoring functions. Third: we add our proprietary rewards program based on scientifically proven gamification. This end-to-end approach with rewards rather than punishment is what’s required to solve smartphone distractions. And remember: safe driving is eco-driving!

Who are the products or services intended for?
Unsafe usage of mobile phones in traffic has a negative effect on  a broad range of organisations in the mobility space. Djustin follows a B2B model and is of interest for any organisation looking to prevent road accidents resulting from distracted phone usage in cars, trucks, buses or even trams. This includes:

  • Fleet owners and lease companies looking to improve safety and reduce costs.
  • Motor insurers aiming to reduce claims or to offer solutions for e.g. fleets or young drivers.
  • Traffic safety organisations or mobility service clubs.
  • Corporates looking to improve compliance with internal safety regulations.

Which problem does your startup solve exactly?
In recent years, distraction has become a leading cause of road accidents. Unsafe mobile phone usage is the #1 reason for distracted driving. In the US, this is causing more crashes than speeding and alcohol! In NL, 50% of smartphone owners use their device in traffic. With 1.3M fatalities and up to 50M injured each year, a growing part of road crashes is directly related to mobile phone distractions. We know it’s dangerous and against the law, but it’s extremely hard to resist the temptation. Fines don’t change behaviour. Anti-distraction apps can be turned off. We need something that works!
